Implants
A dental implant is a small root-shaped screw made from titanium. It is inserted into the jawbone
in an area where a tooth has been lost. The implant then acts as a ‘root’ on which single crowns
can be placed. More implants can be inserted into spaces where several teeth have been lost, to
support dentures or bridges.
What are the benefits of implants?
Dental implants have become the alternative to bridgework for permanently replacing missing
teeth. No preparation of the healthy teeth either side is necessary. Implants can greatly improve the comfort of dentures. They are frequently used to stabilise moving or slipping dentures, which greatly improves the quality of life for those who struggle to cope with dentures.
Am I suitable for implants?
There is no upper age limit for the placement of implants, provided you continue to enjoy
reasonable health. However, it is important to know that habits such as smoking and heavy
drinking can affect the number of problems associated with initial healing and may also lead to a
poorer long-term success rate. |
